The balance between excitation and inhibition is known to play a critical role in the processing of nociceptive information by dorsal horn networks.

In the DH, two key mechanisms are known to be involved in the development and the maintenance of chronic pain: an increased NMDA receptor (NMDA-r) activity and a loss of inhibitory synaptic transmission. Although well studied separately, the interplay between these two mechanisms has been little investigated so far.

The aim of this project is to study NMDA-dependent modulation and plasticity of spinal inhibitory synaptic transmission and to understand the role of these processes in the development and the maintenance of chronic pain.
